The Right Covering

Selecting the Right Covering

When choosing what type of covering for your recliner, consider the following.
Leather can be one of the most comfortable and warm feeling coverings or it can send your skin into orbit on a cold evening. Some leathers are now treated and conditioned so they feel like fleece or a very smooth flannel. You won’t need to throw a blanket on the chair to keep in initial contact comfortable. They instantly warm to your skin so you feel like you have just settled into a hot tub. Some leathers, especially artificial ones, are so cold and crisp to the touch, you’ll want to get a blow-torch and set the chair on fire.

Fabrics can likewise feel very comfortable during that initial contact or rough. I remember sitting in one chair and the covering must have been made from a burlap sack it was so rough. Other fabrics, such as newer microfibers, are incredibly soft and gentle to the touch. You will actually look forward to sitting in them.
Of course, visit our store and try a number of different fabrics and materials. We also have swatches that can help you understand the different textures and styles.
You will also note how each material wears and holds up to use. Leather is a good durable covering that can handle a lot of wear and tear. But cleaning leather has its challenges; more on that subject to come. Cloth coverings can be easier to clean but can wear-out faster due to fiber loss and damage from sharp instruments. My kids love to do homework on couches and chairs and too often we’ve tried to minimize the damage from a pencil.

Considering the Recliner

Almost every home has one and often more than one-the recliner.  They are probably the most comfortable chair in the home for relaxing, reading, watching that favorite movie, or recovering from an illness.

Things you should consider when selecting the perfect chair for your home.

First, is the setting formal or informal?  Most recliners are placed in family rooms or great room where people do most of their living.  However, today’s styles, designs, and fabrics make them appropriate in formal settings as well.

Second, what kind of feel do you want to have in the covering?  Leathers can be plush and almost fabric like or they can be somewhat cold and stiff.  Vinyl may be cheaper but it leaves much to be desired when sitting down and anticipating that instant warm feeling you get in a fabric based covering. Cloth is usually more gentle and people quickly feel its reciprocating warmth when getting comfortable. Even microfibers have found their way into recliners opening a host of new sensations.

Third, what size of chair do you want? True, you may be limited by space or constraints with walls and corners.  Most people try to fit as much chair as possible since more space means more ways to relax in the chair itself.

Finally, what kind of quality are you looking for in the chair? Budgets of course can drive most of the purchasing decision.  As my folks used to tell me, “If you can discipline yourself and save a little money now, buy the higher quality item later so your dollar lasts longer.”  Good advice in my experience.  Consumer reviews and professional analysis will certainly help a lot.

Here at Jones Glass and Decorating, we have found the Lane product line to be the best value for the price.
